ALOA Board of Directors Adopt Code of Ethics Changes and False Advertising Policy to Address the Issue of “Scammers”
Dallas, TX – April 28, 2009 – In a bold move, the Associated Locksmiths of America, Inc. (ALOA), revised its Code of Ethics to address the issue of deceptive advertising.
The ALOA Board added language to the Code of Ethics that directs all members to, “advertise and conduct business in a non-deceptive manner.” To further explain this position, the Board adopted the following policy:
“ALOA members are considered by the public as “Locksmiths You Can Trust.” They are bound by the Associations’ Code of Ethics to, “advertise and conduct business in a non-deceptive manner.”
Therefore, the listing of an address in any print or electronic medium, whether it be an advertisement, directory listing, business card or otherwise holding oneself out to the public as conducting business from that address, when in fact you do not conduct your business from that address, is considered deceptive and therefore a violation of the Code of Ethics. Such practice may subject the ALOA member to a review of their membership by the Board of Directors.”
"Scammers entice consumers who need emergency locksmith services with telephone directory and internet ads that give the impression you are calling a local business," says ALOA's Executive Director, David Lowell, CAE, CML., "These companies manipulate listings with multiple false addresses and phone numbers to make them seem like a neighborhood business. In actuality, the victims frequently are calling out-of state operations that are not locksmith companies at all. This change to the Code of Ethics and added policy statement will ensure that our members are not participating in this deception. Violation of the Code of Ethics and this policy will require that their continued membership in the organization be reviewed by the Board of Directors."
The Associated Locksmiths of America, Inc. (ALOA) is the world's largest organization for locksmiths and other physical security professionals. ALOA is dedicated to being the consumer's first line of defense in physical security by increasing the effectiveness and productivity of locksmiths through educational programs and materials that address broad security interests. ALOA's activities include the ALOA Continuing Education (ACE) program, the ALOA Annual Convention & Security Expo and the ALOA Training Center, which is based in Dallas, Texas. ALOA leads the way for advanced and improved security performance by providing members and the security community with access to a full range of educational programs and services.
